Perhaps one of the best kept secrets of art and craft in the UK is its private presses - there is much splendid work to be had from the home of Kelmscott, Doves, and Ashendene. This web page presents a number of presses who are actively producing books in the UK by letterpress and generally with original illustrations to accompany new texts. Orders should be placed directly with the presses.

The FPBA was formed by a group of individuals sharing common interests in the art of printing, the matching of worthwhile texts with significant images and artistic expression through the structure of a book. Its goal is to promote the appreciation of such books and encourage their production. These aims are to be pursued in a number of ways including enhanced dialogue between book printers, designers and others in the book arts and the inspiration of the public at large. Members of the Association receive two issues of Parenthesis per subscription, generally during a year. Parenthesis has already established itself as a major contribution to the world of fine printing and has become a collectable item, in the tradition of such predecessors as Fine Print and Bookways. Containing articles and reviews, it is profusely illustrated and currently runs to 64pp, all in colour. A de luxe membership is offered which brings a special case-bound edition of Parenthesis containing additional material printed by various presses around the world. As an example, one de luxe issue included signed wood-engravings by Gaylord Schanilec and Frank Martin, and historical ephemera from other presses, all in a slipcase and folder covered in Curwen paper. In pursuit of its goals the Association aims to engage in other appropriate activities: exhibitions, book fairs, press bundles, an FPBA Members Directory, and other ephemera for members. But why not check out details for yourself: The FPBA.
